#12 – The Vinyl Revolution

It’s my new obsession that’s spinning out of control.

In the age of Shazam, Spotify and YouTube, it’s never been easier to find that song on the tip of your tongue. You can quickly skip songs, or spend 20 minutes queuing up a killer playlist for your 5 minute drive to the shops.

It’s easy to dismiss your music. It’s like swiping through the masterpieces of the Louvre on your phone and not really taking them in – but when you walk through the gallery you stop, appreciate and reflect on what’s in front of you.

That’s why I’m into vinyl records now. I spend hours trawling through op shops and record fairs like Indiana Jones trying to find the holy grail.

Then you buy it, bring it home, clean it and play it. The music is harder to find and the record is scratched, but having to work for the music lets me appreciate the experience of listening to it so much more.

This is also why food tastes better when you cook it yourself, or work gets better when you’re interested in what you’re doing. In the words of Tom Lehrer: “life is like a sewer, what you get out of it depends on what you put into it.”

Or maybe in other words, if you put work into something, the satisfaction (like the record) will come around.

Next week: PLT-Why?
