#26 – An Open Apology to the Melbourne Football Club

The internet never forgets.

Back in March, I wrote this piece about the horrors of supporting Melbourne all my life. 3 things were certain: lockdown, taxes, and the Demons putting their supporters through misery.

On Saturday night nature was healing. When we had to find our form in the week before finals, we decided to lie down and be a training drill for the other team. It was the Melbourne I grew up with.

Then the second half came and we fought it out. We steadied, kept our heads and impossibly got it done in the last minute (which is how I did my uni assignments by the way).

The captain, Max Gawn, who 3 years ago missed a similar goal against that same team; kicked the winning goal. A thousand champagne corks hit ceilings that night across locked-down Melbourne.

There’s still a grand prize to win. But no matter the result, if we show that fight through the finals series, then this has been a great season.

There is pride in the colours again. There are kids growing up loving the club.

So Melbourne Football Club, I’m sorry. And thank you for rewarding the faith. I’m going to go paint my fence red and blue. Maybe buy some fish and name them Max, Clayton and Trac. Not an overreaction at all.

Still next week: Specialisation is for insects
